From the 1920s there was the widespread use of cavity walls in the construction of properties. The outer and inner leaves of the brickwork or masonry were ‘tied’ together by using some form of cavity wall tie. The old metal ties had no protective coating or an insufficient one which deteriorates over time, especially where there is moisture penetration, normally due to weathering.
When the wall ties corrode they expand and most commonly cause horizontal cracking in the mortar bed joints; there can also be bulging in the walls and in extreme cases the outer leaf of the wall can collapse.
We can undertake a survey of your existing ties to determine their condition, and if they need replacing, can provide you with an estimate to install new resin fixed stainless steel replacement wall ties. The existing ties would be disconnected from the outer leaf of the brickwork, and isolated using insulating foam to prevent further corrosion taking place.
